Calcium Carbide the multi-talent for metallurgy
we can provide our customers the highest service level, a short reaction time and broad reliability - Calcium Carbide
Calcium Carbide - developing new and improving current products

Secondary Metallurgy

Calcium Carbide is applied in various processes in the secondary metallurgy of steel. As a fine powder it is injected  in the deep desulfurization. Fine grained or lumpy product is applied for deoxidation at tapping and for slag reduction.

Calzot® offers an effective, safe and low cost method to the steel worker for nitrification in liquid metal processing as well as in nitride hardening of finished components.

CalciPro® expands the well-established cored wire technology with the filling material Calcium Carbide. The application of CalciPro® in the calcium treatment of steel leads to highest efficiency, safety and lowest costs.

CalciPro® improves castability by preventing clogging during continuous casting. It is used to modify inclusions and to improve steel properties like machinability.

AlzChem offers a solution for safe transport, storage and handling. The conventional 13 mm cored wire is directly pulled out of an approved container.

Performance benefits:

  • Reduction of Ca-treatment costs per ton steel
  • Reduction of treatment time
  • High Calcium yield
  • Improved castability
  • Improved steel quality and effective inclusion modification
  • Low environmental impact
  • Universal application - especially for low-Si grades

Calzot® is an effective, safe and low cost additive for nitrogen alloying in liquid metal processing as well as in nitride hardening of finished components.

Calzot® is offered in paper or plastic bags, steel drums, bigbags or as cored wire.
Depending on application purpose and technique we will recommend the suitable granulation.
The highest yield and precision is reached when Calzot® is applied as cored wire.

Performance benefits:

  • Significant cost savings compared to Ferro alloys
  • High and constant nitrogen content for safe alloying
  • Less temperature and less time compared to alloying via gas phase
  • Lowest level of impurities

Calcium Carbide is a highly powerful reagent for various applications in secondary metallurgy:

  • Desulfurization to ultra-low sulfur contents by injection of fine Calcium Carbide powder
  • Deoxidation and slag treatment by addition of coarse Calcium Carbide during tapping or at the ladle treatment station

Calcium Carbide is packed in containers from 1 to 1.5 t or in steel drums of 120 kg.
Different granulations are available.

Performance benefits:

  • Reduced costs and improved cleanliness due to gaseous deoxidation products
  • Ultra-low sulfur contents and slag with high sulfur capacity
  • Recovery of oxidized metals like Cr, Mn, Si, Fe
  • Fast reduction of aggressive furnace slag results in increased refractory life
  • Less consumption of synthetic slag and slag builders

CalciPro® cored wire is an established Calcium-treatment technology for inclusion modification to improve castability and to optimize material properties in commercial steel plants. Calcium Carbide is well known as an effective desulfurization agent for hot metal in modern economic steel production. In addition, Calcium Carbide can also be used for liquid steel desulfurization. In production plants where no lance for powder injection is available at the ladle treatment station, CalciPro®...

Acetylene (C2H2) is the world's most efficient and hottest burning standard welding gas. For producing acetylene, the reaction of calcium carbide (CaC2) with water (H2O) is used, whereas acetylene and lime milk (Ca(OH)2) is generated.   CaC2 + 2 H2O --> C2H2 + Ca(OH)2   For this simple and proven process, AlzChem's calcium carbide is used for more than a century. Calcium carbide is of strategic value for AlzChem, as it is the basis of the NCN-chain. Originating...

In the global market the requirements for steel quality are increasing continuously. One of the most important parameters is the cleanliness, which describes the number and size of nonmetallic inclusions in the material. The cored wire CalciPro®, based on Calcium Carbide, is applied in secondary metallurgy to improve the cleanliness. It provides calcium, which modifies the existing oxide and sulfide inclusions in the steel melt and improves castability. The formation, control and effect of...

CaD® is a powerful desulfurization agent based on fine calcium carbide (CaC2) powder. It is available in different grades, which consist of calcium carbide mixed with various supplements. As an example volatile coal powder increases both efficiency and reaction rate. Other additives can optimize slag properties and reduce iron losses. AlzChem produces special CaD® mixtures tailored to the individual requirements of the steel producers.   In the production of high quality steel,...
