Project explores the potential of Eminex® for methane reduction in dairy farming

Practical climate protection measures are a key element on the path towards more sustainable milk production. To effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions along the value chain, Uelzena eG, a german dairy cooperative, works together with dairy farms to explore innovative approaches. These include the joint pilot project involving the manure additive Eminex®, which is explained in more detail in the Uelzena Group’s latest Sustainability Report 2025.

As part of its climate strategy, Uelzena eG aims to systematically identify emission sources within milk production and test potential mitigation measures under real-world farming conditions. One of these emission sources is methane emissions from manure storage, which make a significant contribution to the carbon footprint of raw milk.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the milk supply chain is becoming increasingly important for the dairy industry. It is essential to identify where emissions occur and how farms can take targeted action to reduce them. Effective solutions must integrate seamlessly into everyday farm operations and deliver measurable progress.

This is where Eminex® comes in: The manure additive influences the microbial processes in the slurry and can therefore reduce methane formation during storage.  To evaluate the potential of this technology under real-life conditions, Uelzena eG launched a pilot project together with four selected dairy farms at the end of 2025.

In addition to the potential reduction of methane emissions, the Sustainability Report highlights further positive effects. The farms observed a significant reduction in foam formation. At the same time, the homogeneity of the manure improved. Storage capacities could be utilized more efficiently, and agitation times prior to field application were significantly reduced. Furthermore, farmers reported improved barn conditions due to reduced odor development.

The project has the potential to contribute to achieving climate protection targets.

The findings will be systematically evaluated and, if successful, could be transferred to other farms in order to further advance emission reductions along the entire milk supply chain.

The inclusion of the Eminex® project in the Sustainability Report underlines the importance of practical solutions for achieving climate targets in the dairy industry.

It also demonstrates that sustainability is particularly effective when innovative technologies and committed farmers work together on practical improvements.
