A landmark changes its look: Alzchem dismantles decommissioned chimney at its Hart site

Unterneukirchen/Hart, September 2026 – Anyone approaching Hart recognizes them: the three striking chimneys at the Alzchem site. For decades, these structures—visible from afar—have defined the townscape and served as a familiar landmark for many people in the region. Now a change is on the horizon: one of the three chimneys is being dismantled. 

The approximately 100-meter-high chimney was built in the 1940s and has been out of operation for many years. Inspections of the structure have shown that it has since sustained damage, and renovation work to preserve the chimney has become necessary. To avoid extensive renovation costs, Alzchem has opted for a controlled dismantling. 

“We are aware that the chimney is a well-known landmark for many people in Hart and the surrounding area,” says Dr. Jürgen Sans, Chief Production Officer of Alzchem Group AG. “That is precisely why we want to inform the public early on about the upcoming work and transparently explain why this step is necessary.” 

Preparations for the dismantling are already underway. The chimney will be dismantled step by step in a controlled manner. To do this, the structure will first be fully covered with scaffolding. Subsequently, the individual building blocks will be removed from the top down and inward. This will help minimize dust and minimize disruption to the surrounding area.  

The work is expected to take two to three months. During this time, the site’s appearance may seem unfamiliar. However, the two remaining chimneys will remain unchanged and will continue to be needed for plant operations.

The demolition will change the familiar appearance of the site. The two chimneys that remain in use will continue to shape the townscape of Hart in the future as well.
