Eminex® research project wins award
The research project EMeRGE was awarded Silver in the Science category of the 2026 Biogas Innovation Award. The project focuses on Eminex®, a product from Alzchem. The award ceremony took place on 20 and 21 May 2026 during the Biogas Innovation Congress in Osnabrück at the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). The award recognizes solutions that measurably advance the biogas sector and agriculture—for example, in the field of climate protection.
A panel of experts selects 15 ideas to be presented to a professional audience. The awards are presented in the categories Science and Industry, with the Science Award—Gold, Silver and Bronze—endowed with a total of €10,000.
The jury honored the results of the EMeRGE research project, a collaboration between Alzchem and the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB). The study shows that Eminex® can significantly reduce methane emissions during the storage of manure and digestate, stabilize plant-available nitrogen, and—after a storage period of at least 14 days—increase methane yields by up to 11 percent. At the congress, Dr. Christiane Herrmann (ATB), project leader of EMeRGE, presented the key findings and their benefits for agricultural operations and biogas plants.
Award for a practical climate protection solution
Eminex® is an additive based on calcium cyanamide that is mixed in low dosages into manure and digestate (residual substrates from biogas plants). During storage, it can significantly reduce methane formation in farm manure, thereby lowering storage-related emissions. At the same time, the treatment helps to better stabilize nutrients—especially nitrogen—in the fertilizer. When the material is later used in a biogas plant, the full methane potential is still available. The measure can be implemented without any additional structural modifications to storage facilities.
