Greener and faster to the destination: New AlzChem wagons lead to even more reliable and efficient deliveries thanks to GPS

Early 2020 AlzChem/Nordic Carbide AB upgraded its’ wagon fleet with a new wagon type for the transport of Calcium Carbide to our customers, who use the Carbide for the production of acetylene. The product is packaged in special containers, so-called Turn Bins, which are then loaded onto rail wagons and transported to our customers.

Advantages of the new railroad cars:

  • In addition to the UACNS-wagons for transport of hot metal desulfurization mixtures we have now a second type of wagons that is equipped with GPS trackers; the data from the GPS tracker help to locate and track our railroad cars. In case of unforeseen events like strikes or railway track closure caused by severe weather conditions, we can rapidly evaluate and review the transport situation and avoid supply interruptions. As a consequence of reliable, faster deliveries, the customer has the possibility to reduce stock levels and, therefore, also reduce costs.
  • The GPS trackers work with the latest technology (LTE, UMTS, GPRS, GNSS). Furthermore, they are equipped with a rechargeable battery - reloaded via solar panels - and an exchangeable battery: only when the tracker does not get enough electricity from the storage battery charged via sunlight, the exchangeable battery helps out. This is environmentally beneficial as most of the electricity is from a “green energy source”.
  • Using this wagon type is more efficient because we are in the position to transport up to 8% more Calcium Carbide with one of these wagons compared to the old wagon type. The outcome is a reduced number of transports to each customer and therefore a better cost situation, but of course, it is also environmentally beneficial as fewer transports for the same volume are required.
